Persons wishing to be married in the State of Maine must apply for a marriage license from the Town Clerk's Office.
State of Maine Intention of Marriage Application
Maine residents may apply in the town in which one of them resides. Non-residents may file in any Town/City in the State of Maine. Once the intentions are filed and the license issued, the parties are free to marry anywhere within the State. I.D. must be provided when filing for a license. Persons previously married, must present certified documents indicating the dissolution of the former marriage.
There is no waiting period for the license to be issued. Both parties must sign the license before it can be issued. The license is then valid for 90 days from the date of issuance.
The fee for a license is $40.00. Following the ceremony the license is permanently filed with the Town Clerk's Office in the Town/City it was issued. Certified copies can be obtained for a fee of $15.00 for the first one and $6.00 for each additional one the same day.
